A New Phenomenon

The Rhythm+ band fuses popular West African rhythms with West Indian influences to create a new sound that entertains while it educates the listener. According to leader Tony Ansou John, the primary mandate of the band is to preserve and pay homage to the calypso and calypso bands of the early to mid-twentieth century. And make great dance music at the same time!

For The Love Of The Drum

If music is the food of love, then the music made by the Djembe drum is organic health food creating love between people all over the world.

Mamady Keita, Famoudou Konate, M’Bemba Bangoura to name just a few are masters of the Djembe currently spreading the music of West Africa throughout Europe, North America and beyond.
Those who have departed this world such as Mohamed Kemoko Sano (experts and trail-blazers in promulgating the culture of the peoples of Mali, Senegal, Guinea) have left a lot for us to discover and ultimately emulate.

This site is dedicated to the propagation of the music and culture of West Africa as developed and practiced in the countries of Senegal, Guinea, Mali and the surrounding region. Pull up your chair and taste the delights of West Africa.

Dreams can become reality. With a little hard work, some luck and the right people. Rhythm + is the result of audacity meeting a life-long love of music.

How it All Started

While studying at Moustapha Bangoura’s Bagatae drum conference Ansou noticed a great similarity between the rhythms he was being taught and the calypso music of his native land Trinidad and Tobago.
Thus was born the idea of fusing calypso/soca with the music of Guinea and Rhythm + was born.

Performances have included:

  • “It’s Afrolypso Time” at The Trane Studio
  • Ontario Place Vista Courtyard
  • Afrofest at Queen’s Park, Toronto
  • The Burlington Sound of Music Festival
  • The Toronto Pride Blockorama Stage

  • The Barrie Caribfest Music Festival
